Skin ageing
At a young age, most of us have healthy, radiant and elastic skin that heals quickly when injured.
Visible signs of skin ageing appear as we get older: Wrinkles, sagging skin and an increasing number of age spots, freckles, moles and other pigment changes as a result of sun exposure.
The first visible signs of skin ageing, which appear from around the age of 30 but start as early as around 25, are fine lines and small wrinkles. These lines, which appear in several places on the face, are the most noticeable signs of ageing. Fine lines appear first. These are usually noticeable on the outer edge of the eyes, the so-called laugh lines or crow’s feet. Wrinkles also appear on the cheeks. Horizontal lines form on the forehead as a result of facial expressions and become deeper over time. Narrower, vertical lines between the eyebrows are caused by frowning. Deeper wrinkles, known as nasolabial folds, form at the sides of the mouth. They form when the skin becomes sagging and loses elasticity and volume.
The loss of volume, which is not always easy to recognize, is also referred to as sagging skin, sagging facial contours, a turkey neck or a haggard appearance. The appearance changes in a way that is difficult to describe. The sagging contours associated with volume loss can give the face an ill-tempered, sad or stressed expression.
From around the age of 50, our skin loses elasticity and firmness, the skin structure becomes weaker and deeper wrinkles form. Over the years, it also loses its ability to retain moisture, dries out and loses the typical glow of youthful skin.
